Music connects the world
Welcome to the new and improved Longfellow school.
Why music? The Music Effect
Music has the ability to effect each human being. My goal is for each student to have a positive experience in music class where we tap into the uniqueness of each individual. Music not only connects the world but it stimulates the brain to high thinking skills such as problem solving and critical thinking. Strength in music can lead to success in other core subjects. I would love to get to know you as parents so feel free to drop me an email or call.
Music Standards:
As mentioned above, we believe music is a crucial part of a successful and balanced education. The national core standards have just been revised for arts and music education! Music educators alike are excited to share these standards with you. We strive to cover the standards throughout the year as part of a well rounded education for all students. Please visit the following websites to see a list of the standards and learn more about the future of music.

Expectations:
Overall in music class, students are expected show appropriate participation and try, but there are three guidelines we try to follow.
Triple Threat Music Expectations....
1. Respect - respect the teacher, your neighbor, yourself, and instruments
2. Responsibility - students are responsible for creating a positive learning environment by following direction and handling equipment with care.
3. Really Kind - Students are encouraged to share instruments, the class space, thoughts, and ideas.
Students are assessed through weekly activities in the classroom both performance and standards based.
Holiday Program: Monday, December 14, 2015

News:
- 4th Graders are starting to play recorders. The music teacher will provide recorders for in class use only. A recorder study/song packet will be sent home with the students. If students are interested in buying a recorder for home, I would suggest Yamaha brand for quality tone. Fourth graders will also have a multiple choice district music test in September and again in May. This test is to designed to measure students' growth throughout the school year. Their score does not reflect their grade. It serves as a evaluation for myself to improve as a teacher.
- 5th Grade will be working studying the history and roots of contemporary music ranging from early Ragtime and Jazz to Rock and Roll.
- 5th grade Band and Orchestra: Please keep an eye out for fliers and information regarding band and orchestra. The band teacher is Melissa Smith and Michael Certalic directs the orchestra. Both are fantastic instructors. Students do not need to choose an instrument right away but are given a few weeks to try out some instruments. You may purchase an instrument or rent from one of Bozeman's fine music stores, Eckroth Music and Music Villa. Instruments can also be found on craigslist but be cautious of the quality of instruments. Your child will receive notice of the Bozeman Instrument Swap on September 13th. It takes place in the Bozeman High School Cafeteria. It is a great way to find an affordable instrument or trade in an instrument you have from home.
- Spring plays - Classes will be presenting a musical play at the end of the school year so watch for performance dates.
